Southampton needs to pray the wins just keep flowing in their spectacular late bid to gatecrash the top two positions in the Championship.

At one stage this season, the Saints were all the way down in 21st in the division, under the miserable, and short-lived, reign of Will Still.

With Tonda Eckert a more comfortable fit in the St. Mary's dug-out, the promotion chasers are only one point off Ipswich Town, who occupy that final, golden automatic promotion spot.

Southampton need to maintain their focus on beating Bristol City on Tuesday, but they will need a favour from their ex-boss Nathan Jones, who endured a Still-like spell on the South Coast, rather than being an Eckert-style fan favourite.

Jones' disastrous reign at Southampton

The Welshman was seriously out of his depth at Southampton when he was handed the main manager's gig in November 2022, after Ralph Hasenhuttl was given the boot.

Upon his arrival, the mood around the club was toxic, with the Austrian leaving the club in an almighty mess, having steered the lowly Premier League side to only three wins from 14 league games, as they occupied 18th spot in the division.

Jones was clearly appointed to try and be a brand-new breath of fresh air, having been a phenomenal EFL manager with Luton Town, as they rose from League Two to the Championship.

The Premier League is a different kettle of fish altogether and Jones found that out immediately, as he was axed after barely three months at the helm, owing to a dire record of just one league win from eight top-flight clashes.

He has since found his feet again in the EFL with Charlton Athletic, with the Addicks looking to be safe from the drop on 50 points, in 18th spot in the Championship.

Southampton won't want Jones and Co. to be downing their tools, though, knowing they're practically safe, as the South Coast giants need a mammoth favour from their old, cursed boss, as Ipswich travel to the Valley on Wednesday night, a day after Eckert's men do battle with the Robins.

Charlton will back themselves to pull off an upset, too, having surprisingly beaten Ipswich 3-0 at Portman Road, earlier in the season.

Three goals in a crazy 12-minute spell in the second half would gift the visitors the win in Suffolk, so the hope will be they can sucker punch Kieran McKenna's heavily fancied outfit, again, on Wednesday night, as they're playing on their own turf.

Amazingly, as well, Ipswich haven't won on their travels to Charlton in 11 long years, with Daryl Murphy scoring a brace in 2015 to help the Tractor Boys to their own emphatic 3-0 victory.

If Charlton were to keep to their end of the bargain and beat Ipswich, and Southampton were to overcome Roy Hodgson's Robins, the Saints would potentially enter into the top two, a point ahead of the Suffolk side.

There is also the Millwall result to look out for, as Charlton's fierce rivals play away at Stoke City, while the visitors from Bristol come to St. Mary's.

The race to finish inside the top two, alongside Coventry City, is really beginning to heat up, with the mid-week fixtures up next in the Championship potentially making or breaking various teams pushes up the league.
