Tonda Eckert just refused to let Southampton's record-breaking run define them

Southampton have equalled two records that have stood for over 100 years after winning 2-1 away at Swansea on Saturday.

This win saw the Saints equal two records that have stood for over 100 years. They have won seven league games on the spin for the first time since 1908 and won eight games in a row across all competitions for the first time since 1896/97.

Tonda refuses to let a run of form define his team

But Southampton First Team Head Coach Tond Eckert has refused to let the Saints' unbelievable run of form define his team as they head into their few remaining games of the season.

Despite winning eight in a row, Southampton have not secured promotion or won a trophy. They could still do both.

"For me, it's not the time for any big reflections," he told the Echo after the Swansea match. "It's a nice side fact, but it doesn't take us anywhere.

"We still have big goals to play for this season, so I think we're doing well in the way that we've been going over the last few weeks.“

The Saints have an FA Cup semi-final to look forward to on Saturday, but the young German coach is not looking beyond Tuesday night's Championship encounter against Bristol City.

"We need to put that game to bed tonight, and then we have a big one coming up on Tuesday against Bristol City."

This has been Eckert's mantra since he took on the top job at St Mary's. The coach has been keen to keep his players grounded and focused solely on the next game.

Should the Saints overcome Bristol City on Tuesday, they could leapfrog both Millwall and Ipswich Town into second place in the Championship.

One significant gap that Eckert has to overcome

To do so, Southampton's 33-year-old coach will need to get the better of City boss Roy Hodgson, who is 45 years his senior.

The Saints would also need Stoke City's help to restrict Millwall to fewer than three points when they meet on Tuesday evening at the Bet365 Stadium.

The Southampton boss is quite right to point out that his side has not won anything yet and that the time to reflect on his team's accomplishments will be at the end of the season.

However, great runs like these warrant the high praise and attention that have started coming the way of the young coach. With Tonda at the wheel, Southampton fans are beginning to dream of returning to the Premier League and perhaps even causing another upset in the FA Cup.

But first, it's Bristol City on Tuesday. Tonda Eckert won't be letting his players look any further ahead than that.
