Aaron Ramsdale, a couple of years back, would have been in the England squad that just faced Spain in Nations League action.
Indeed, Ramsdale would collect five senior Three Lions caps during his Arsenal peak, with two of those caps actually falling in the Nations League against Italy and Hungary in 2022.
Now, however, he is rotting away in the reserves at Southampton, with his last men's outing for the Saints - away from a one-off U21s appearance this season - falling in May of last year, as the South Coast side fell to a 2-1 home defeat to the hands of Mikel Arteta and Co.
An outsider looking in might well be baffled that Ramsdale isn't in the first team picture under Tonda Eckert, considering he does boast 42 Premier League clean sheets.
But, the German has stuck by Daniel Peretz as his number one stopper, ever since the ex-Bayern Munich keeper joined his group on loan last season, and that loyalty in the Israel international doesn't look as if it will waver, despite the heights the 28-year-old has previously hit.
There is only one ending in sight, therefore, and that's Ramsdale being moved on, and his former teammate at AFC Bournemouth in Asmir Begovic has weighed in with his thoughts on the number 32's Southampton limbo over the drawn out international break.
Begovic's thoughts on Ramsdale's situation
BBC Sport have put together an extensive article on the rise, and subsequent fall of Ramsdale, with the one-time Newcastle United loanee once regarded as a bright talent at the Emirates, only to now be shut out of the Saints first team fold.
The aforementioned Bosnian knows the 28-year-old well, as Ramsdale was a back-up option to Begovic, when the pair were together at Bournemouth.
He remembers having to mentor the ex-England international and labels Ramsdale as a "fantastic goalkeeper" even with all the recent troubles facing him.
But, he believes that a "few things haven't aligned for him [at Southampton]" which includes the team's relegation down to the Championship at the end of the 2024/25 campaign tarnishing his St. Mary's reputation pretty quickly.
Therefore, the best solution ahead is to move the 6-foot-3 keeper on once and for all, but that is easier said than done, with Begovic acknowledging that this isn't a "straightforward situation" with Ramsdale on a hefty wage, for someone who will be so rusty when it comes to gametime.
Surely, though, a club out there will be willing to take a risk on the forgotten stopper, who once amassed a stunning 14 clean sheets in one single Premier League campaign for the Gunners.
There's bigger fish to fry currently for the Championship promotion hopefuls when it comes to the worry pile, however...
Southampton have bigger worries than Ramsdale
Indeed, right now, the Saints remain consumed by what is going to happen with Eckert long-term.
It still isn't known what the severity of his ban will be, as the FA continue to drag the whole Spygate scandal on, despite the hearing taking place on Thursday.
The extent of the penalty will come to light sooner rather than later, and then there's the whole ordeal of having to find a replacement, if the ban is a lengthy one.
The bother with Ramsdale can be left on the side until the January transfer window, with the hope that a suitor is willing to take a risk on the neglected keeper, when the busyness of the window resumes.
