Southampton made it two wins in a row under interim manager Tonda Eckert. The under-21 boss must surely be in the conversation when Sport Republic start interviewing candidates for the vacant manager position.
Eckert's side were nearly ahead in the opening five minutes when Wednesday's Liam Palmer inadvetently chested the ball over his own goalkeeper who was rushing out to collect a bouncing cross. With the ball dribbling agonisingly towards his own goal, Palmer managed to smash the ball away to safety.
Wednesday's American goalkeeper, Ethan Horvath, made an absolute mess of a scuffed shot by Caspar Jander a few minutes later. Horvath's fumble enabled the ball to cross the line to put Saints a goal up.
The goal came from a counter press which resulted in Léo Scienza going on a driving run and feeding Liam Manning out on the left. Manning's low cross picked out Jander, who is beginning to make a habit of getting on to the end of chances.
Southampton went further ahead after 17 minutes when Tom Fellows cut in from the right and slid in Finn Azaz to drive the ball low and hard into the far corner.
When Wednesday's Harry Amass pulled one back after 25 minutes with a well placed shot from distance. Gavin Bazunu could, and probably should, have done much better with a shot from so far out.
Bazunu made up for his error with a fine reflex save from Bailey Cadamarteri just before half-time. His strong left-hand beat the ball out into the path of Jack Stephens to clear.
Adam Armstrong capped off his best performance of the season with a fine finish with the outside of his right foot early in the second half to put the game to bed. Eckert's men controlled the remaining half hour to secure all three points.

Goalkeepers and Defenders
Gavin Bazunu (GK) - 7/10 - Despite letting a tame shot bounce past him for Wednesday's opening goal, Bazunu made amends with a couple of very good saves later in the first half.
Tom Fellows (RWB) - 8/10 - A brilliant performance from Fellows today. Dynamic in attacking positions and reliable in defensive areas. Claimed an assist for Saints' second goal with a slide rule through ball for Finn Azaz.
Jack Stephens (CB) - 6.5/10 - Threw his body infront of everything and made five clearances in a very strong performance. Made good use of the ball in possession, completing 92% of passes accurately.
Nathan Wood (CB) - 6.5/10 - Another solid performance from Wood. He made seven clearances and completed 89% of 46 passes.
Taylor Harwood-Bellis (CB) - 7/10 - This was more like it from Harwood-Bellis. Resolute in defence, comfortable in possession and even claimed an assist for Armstrong's goal.
Ryan Manning (LWB) - 7/10 - Five crosses were the result of Manning being encouraged to get further forward than on Wednesday evening at QPR. One of his crosses contributed to the opening goal for Jander.

Midfielders
Caspar Jander (CM) - 8/10 - Jander's best performance of the season so far. Brilliant in the counter press and dynamic in attacking transitions. Deserved his goal.
Flynn Downes (CM) - 7/10 - A strong 45 minutes before he was withdrawn. A battling performance in midfield with Downes involved in five defensive actions. His passing was much more accurate than usual (88% of 25 passes).

Forwards
Finn Azaz (RF) - 8/10 - Azaz was a constant thorn in Wednesday's side. By the time he was withdrawn after 77 minutes, the Irishman had five shots (two on target) and scored his first goal for the team.
Adam Armstrong (CF) - 8/10 - Armstrong's hard work paid off today with the geordie's fifth goal of the season. A brilliantly taken finish with the outside of his right foot put the Saints two goals ahead and effectively put the match beyond Wednesday.
Leo Scienza (LF) - 8/10 - Another glittering performance from the Brazilian who was integral to the majority of Southampton's attacking transitions. Withdrawn after 66 minutes and replaced by Jay Robinson.
