Southampton and Leicester needed extra time to settle their third encounter of the season.
Saints made ten changes to the team that started at the King Power Stadium on Tuesday and finished the match with no fewer than five under-21 players on the pitch.
After going one-nil up on the stroke of half-time through a Cyle Larin penalty, the Saints were pegged back when Oliver Skipp executed an acrobatic overhead kick in the 52nd minute.

Cameron Archer was unable to convert from close range following up a parried Kuryu Matsuki effort.
Leicester pressed for a winner late on but were denied by a Joshua Quarshie clearnace from under his own crossbar in added time.
Full-Time: Southampton 1-1 Leicester
Southampton got their noses in front again, 19 minutes into extra-time, when James Bree headed home from a diverted Ryan Manning free-kick.
The young side hung on well to secure their place in the hat for round five. The 50th anniversary cup run continues!
AET: Southampton 1-1 Leicester
Goalkeeper and Defenders
George Long (GK) - 6/10 -Â Accomplished on his senior debut for the club. Couldn't really do much about Leicester's equaliser despite claims to the contrary.
Elias Jelert (RB) - 6/10 -Â Another decent performance from the right-back. Switched on, tidy in possession and positionally sound. Forced off with cramp in extra-time.
Nathan Wood (CB) - 6/10 -Â Sluggish again in possession and a timely reminder of why he has been out of the side. Did however, manage to leave Daka on his backside with a calm piece of skill in the second half.
Joshua Quarshie (CB) - 6/10 -Â Quarshie never really got the measure of Jordan Ayew. The experienced Leicester striker won free-kicks off the young German international almost every time that they came together in a challenge. Like Manning in the first half, Quarshie made a desperate goal-line clearance in added-on time.
Ryan Manning (LB) - 7/10 -Â An incredible goal-line clearance in the first half ensured that Southampton didn't go a goal down in the first half. Given a stern test by Jeremy Monga, the captain stood up to the test well. Delivered a wicked free-kick in extra-time to set up James Bree's goal.
Midfielders
Oriol Romeu (CM) - 6/10 -Â Looked like he'd never been away at times, and he made some critical interventions to keep Leicester at bay in the first half. Replaced after an hour by Barnaby Williams.
Cameron Bragg (CM) - 7/10 -Â Covered a huge amount of ground alongside Romeu and got on the ball plenty often enough to orchestrate passages of play from midfield. Fit enough to play the full 120 minutes and came through it very well.
Attackers
Sam Edozie (AML) - 7/10 - A different prospect to Léo Scienza, Edozie hugged the touchline throughout the first half. His mazy run and persistence led to the penalty for Southampton's opener. A lack of end product was frustrating, but his direct running was encouraging. Withdrawn after an hour.
Cameron Archer (AMC) - 6/10 -Â Worked hard to support Cyle Larin in attack and closed down defenders. Gave the ball away too often in possession and was ignored every time that he tried to run in behind. Wasted two good opportunities in the second half. Nothing is going right for him at the moment.
Kuryu Matsuki (AMR) - 6/10 -Â Lively and energetic down the right. Floated over a couple of crosses from out wide. Had a shot parried which Archer should have scored from. Faded in the second-half and was replaced late in the match.
Cyle Larin (CF) - 6/10 -Â Held the ball up well despite having limited touches in the first half. Took the penalty well, calmly rolling the ball into the bottom corner past Jakub Stolarczyk. Faded in the second half. Withdrawn with just five minutes of the ninety minutes left.
