Southampton hold their play-off chances firmly in their own hands ahead of the Easter fixtures and a key trip to Wrexham on Tuesday, 7th April.
However, with a little help from relegation strugglers Leicester City and Oxford United, the Saints' path to the Premier League could become a little clearer.
Southampton might be able to celebrate making the play-offs, knowing that doing so probably means that Pompey would have been relegated.
Who is laughing now?
Oxford United's survival would almost certainly doom Portsmouth to spending next season in League One of the EFL. For the U's to have survived, they would have needed to get results against Hull City, Wrexham, and Derby and beaten Portsmouth at Fratton Park on Easter Monday.
With Hull, Wrexham, and Derby all vying for the play-offs, positive results against those three teams could significantly boost the Saints' chances of securing a spot.
Leicester City, like Oxford, have to travel to Fratton Park during the run-in. Defeat to Leicester City could spell the end of a two-season peak in Portsmouth's recent fortunes and send them back to the third tier, where Saints fans will feel they belong.
The Foxes could do Southampton an even bigger favour by taking points from matches against Hull City and Millwall in April.
Southampton must take care of their own business
Although they might be grateful to others for making things easier, Southampton know that they will need to take care of their own form if they are to squeeze into the play-offs at the end of this season.
Tonda Eckert is certainly not taking anything for granted and won't be relying on the players who have been on international duty to come straight into the side after busy spells away from the club.
For the players who haven't been on International duty, the Saints' head coach recognises the need to be both mentally and physically fresh.
He said: "I think that sometimes less is more. There are so many games coming up now over the next two months.Â
It obviously looks a little bit different for the boys who go on international duty, but for the other ones, we try to find a good balance.
It's not to make that a punishment or anything, but just to respect that you also need some mental freshness.
I think physically we're on a good level at the moment, and we are able to put an idea onto the pitch even with not so much preparation.
Sometimes it's easier if you are mentally fresh rather than having an additional day on the training pitch.
So it's not necessarily an additional day off, but I think they have a good balance at the moment of days off and days where we come into work."
The likes of Cyle Larin, Finn Azaz, Shea Charles, and Ryan Manning may need to be eased in gently at a time when the matches will come thick and fast.
If Saints do their bit and Pompey's relegation rivals do theirs, Wembley on the 23rd May could be lightly pencilled into the diary of every Southampton fan.
