Before the end of the first half, Bukayo Saka attempted to lay some passes from the right flank but Bednarek and Harwood-Bellis made several sliding tackles and helped goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale in organising the defence. For the large part of the match, Southampton managed to have a good defensive solidity which was built due to brilliant defensive efforts from the Poland international, who was Southampton's leader at the heart of the defence.
