After the international break, Southampton will host Manchester United in a home Premier League fixture at the St. Mary's Stadium. This is a big match for the Saints who are coming on the back of three consecutive defeats in the league to start their new season. Therefore, Russell Martin's side are expected to put in a much improved performance and take some points from this match.
Several young stars including Cameron Archer and Mateus Fernandes are highly likely to start this match against Erik Ten Hag's Manchester United. However, a former Southampton star is unlikely to play in the match for Manchester United due to a calf injury. The player is Luke Shaw who left the St. Mary's Stadium to join the Red Devils after two brilliant seasons playing for Southampton.
Former Southampton star unlikely to feature for Manchester United
Coming up through the youth ranks at Southampton, Shaw went on to make 67 first team appearances for the Saints before joining Manchester United in 2014. The 29-year-old initially struggled for playing time at the Old Trafford, but since four years he has made the left back spot his own in the United squad. His impressive displays in the recent seasons of the Premier League saw him representing the England national team in several tournaments including the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
In this upcoming match, Shaw is unlikely to feature for the Red Devils due to his injury, however, this match at the St. Mary's Stadium is a special match for him. Shaw made his Premier League debut for Southampton in 2012 and it's where he earned the reputation of being one of the best young full backs in England. Since joining Manchester United, Shaw has faced Southampton several times and he can even come as a second half substitute in the second half as well if he recovers from his injury and gets match fit.
Now it remains to be seen whether Southampton can take their first points of the new season in this Premier League match.
