Jan Bednarek signs three year Southampton contract

Since joining the Saints from Lech Poznan in the 2017 summer transfer window for a transfer fee of , Bednarek has been an impressive addition at the club. The 28-year-old Poland international possesses great defending and his game awareness and leadership abilities make him one of the key players for Southampton. In 223 appearances for the Saints, Bednarek has scored goals and has been a rock solid defensive mainstay in the Southampton defence. 

Last year, there were transfer rumours surrounding Bednarek regarding a move away from Southampton after their relegation, however he stayed at the St. Mary's Stadium and performed consistently well in the Championship to help Russell Martin's side achieve promotion back to the Premier League. This summer also, there were several Premier League clubs such as Fulham, Wolves and Nottingham Forest interested in Bednarek as he entered the final year of his Southampton contract. However, Bednarek has put an end to those speculations after recently signing a new three year Southampton contract at the St. Mary's Stadium.

After signing his new contract, Bednarek opened up on his decision, saying,

"I’m really happy. I think it's the right choice for me, for my family. We all are happy here.

I think this is the right place for me right now. I think I'm in the right place, with the right manager and with the right fans."

Although Southampton haven't had a great start to their Premier League season, they will want to improve from their mistakes and display a much better performance in the coming matches to start taking more points this season. Therefore, star players such as Jan Bednarek and Kyle Walker-Peters have to play a key role in organising the Saints defence who have conceded a lot of goals due to misplaced passes and giving away possession inside their own half.
