Southampton took their first points of the Premier League season with a 1-1 draw with Ipswich Town, thus, getting a good momentum after four consecutive league defeats. Although, the Saints need to improve their finishing as they missed a lot of huge chances throughout the match to double their lead and conceded a last minute equaliser that kept them away from taking a win in the home fixture. Despite that, the overall performance was great and particularly, the midfield looked calm and composed in this match as they helped Southampton keep more ball possession and advance the ball further inside the final third.
One of the standout performers in the midfield was Flynn Downes, who was the captain as well for the Saints in this match following Jack Stephens red card against Manchester United in the 3-0 home defeat. Downes completed out of passes, and displayed his creative flair and all around playmaking as Southampton looked dominant in the midfield this time after giving away possession and misplacing several passes in the first four league matches. The former Ipswich Town star delivered an impressive performance for Russell Martin's side and helped the team in both attack and defence.

Flynn Downes has been brilliant for Southampton since he arrived initially on loan from West Ham last season and played a key role as the Saints achieved promotion to the Premier League by winning the Championship playoffs final against Leeds United. Therefore, Southampton made the decision to sign Downes for a transfer fee of £15 million, who showcased a great display in his first game as Southampton captain and will be aiming to achieve a win as well in the next league fixture.
