Southampton prepared to play in the Premier League this season while Fraser returned to Newcastle United. During his loan spell at the St. Mary's Stadium, Fraser had become a fan favourite at the club and he had a desire to play for the Saints again. Therefore, he joined Southampton on a free transfer from Newcastle in the transfer window and explained his decision to return, saying,
Ryan Fraser expressed his delight on his Southampton return
"I was going nowhere else, it was here or nowhere. I made that decision from day one when I first came through these doors. It has been tough because we have had to wait until the last minute but for Southampton to get me on a free, it had to be done last minute."

With this transfer, Russell Martin's side have added more experience and quality to their squad who are aiming to improve their performance in the league season. In the first three matches, Southampton haven't created much chances and as a result, have scored only one goal in the Premier League. Also, Fraser will adapt quickly to the Saints squad, being well familiar with the English top flight as well as manager Russell Martin's tactical setup.
Hence, Southampton will increase their efforts to improve in the league season with the addition of several key players like Fraser. Now, after the international break, Russell Martin's side face Manchester United in a massive fixture with the aim of taking some points from this match.
