After completing the stunning transfer of Arsenal goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale to bolster their defence, improving the attack remains a priority for Russell Martin's side. The Saints have faced struggles in front of goal as they are yet to score their first goal after their return to the Premier League. Therefore, they have completed the surprise signing of West Ham forward Maxwel Cornet on a season long loan transfer for this season.

Cornet starred previously for Burnley in his debut Premier League campaign in the 2021/22 season, before joining West Ham in 2022. However, Cornet has found game time hard to come by in his two seasons at the London Stadium due to more competition at the left wing role at West Ham. Now, transfer expert, Fabrizio Romano has reported that Southampton have completed the loan transfer move of Cornet, saying,

Cornet is a nice addition to the Saints squad and will provide more quality to the left flank. The 27-year-old has blistering pace and impressive finishing inside the box, which makes him as the one of the most important players for Southampton in their aim to avoid relegation this season. Moreover, Cornet completes the front three for Russell Martin's side alongside Ben Brereton Diaz and Kamaldeen Sulemana, which has pace and creativity to score more goals in the league.

Also, Southampton are facing Brentford, who have been one of the most improved teams in the English top flight in the last three seasons. In this match, the Saints are expected to do better than the previous fixture against Nottingham Forest, where they played well but couldn't score any goal and Forest star Morgan Gibbs White scored the only goal of the game which made it back to back defeats for Russell Martin's side. Thus, it remains to be seen whether they take their first points of the new season in this match.
