After the international break, Southampton prepared to face Premier League Manchester United in a massive home fixture at the St. Mary's Stadium with a much improved performance expected from Russell Martin's side who already faced three defeats in their first three league matches. The Saints started the match on a high note as well with an encouraging opening half an hour performance where Southampton were good in their build up play and made several advancing runs inside the final third. Young talent Tyler Dibling was the best player for the Saints in the first half and came very close to scoring with a brilliant attempt on goal before being fouled inside the box and winning a penalty.
Russell Martin's side had a great chance to score a goal and increase their chances of taking either a draw or a win from this match. However, new signing Cameron Archer's penalty was saved by Manchester United keeper Andre Onana and the promising centre forward couldn't score his first Southampton goal on his first Premier League start for the Saints. This was a turning point in the match as the Red Devils started creating more chances and after a few minutes, took the 1-0 lead with a header scored by Matthijs De Ligt.
Southampton concede three goals again in 3-0 defeat against Manchester United
Erik Ten Hag's started advancing more inside the final third and star forward Marcus Rashford scored the second goal with a brilliant long range attempt to find the back of the net and made it 2-0 inside the first half. As has been the case with Southampton this season, missing huge goalscoring chances shifted their good momentum away and therefore, they were behind again at half time. In the second half, Manchester United dominated the possession and passing stats and started advancing more towards the Southampton half which saw captain Jack Stephens getting a red card for a mistimed tackle attempt on Alejandro Garnacho.
The match ended with Manchester United winning 3-0 with Garnacho scoring the third goal in the last minute of the game which resulted in a fourth consecutive league defeat for Southampton.
