Southampton have only scored one goal from their first three Premier League matches which has highlighted the need to make lineup changes to the attack. Several talented young players such as Cameron Archer, Tyler Dibling and Sam Amo-Ameyaw can get more playing time in the upcoming matches alongside new signings Ryan Fraser and Maxwel Cornet, who joined Southampton on the final day of the summer transfer window. Also, another centre forward could be started in the Saints front three, who is very close to recovering from his muscle injury and returning to full fitness.
The player is Scotland striker Ross Stewart who joined Southampton last year following his impressive displays in the Championship. In the 2022/23 season, the 28-year-old scored ten goals and provided three assists for Sunderland as they finished sixth in the Championship and narrowly missed out on achieving promotion to the Premier League. Last season Stewart made four appearances for Russell Martin's side before getting sidelined with a muscle injury for the large part of the season.
Southampton forward will return in the Carabao Cup match
Although Stewart hasn't played in the Premier League, his finishing and impressive aerial ability makes him a good centre forward option at the club. Now, manager Russell Martin has revealed that Stewart could play the Carabao Cup match against Everton next week, saying,
"Ross will be in the squad on Tuesday. He’s looking brilliant. He’s been in a good place now for a couple of weeks.Russell Martin
He maybe be involved on Saturday’s squad but he will definitely be in the squad on Tuesday. After that it will be up to him to make sure he stays there."
The Saints have struggled to score more goals this season and thus, could bring Stewart in the starting lineup to take more attempts on goal from near the edge of the box. Meanwhile, it remains to be seen how Cameron Archer performs against Manchester United in the Premier League match.
