Southampton decided to sell one of their best academy talents, Jayden Meghoma to Premier League side Brentford on the final day of the transfer window in a £5 million transfer. Despite having star left back Kyle Walker-Peters in the squad, this decision came as a huge surprise for Southampton fans who wanted the young prodigy to continue his development as a quality left back at the St. Mary's Stadium. After his transfer, Meghoma explained his decision suggesting he agreed to join Brentford in order to get more playing time in the first team.
This season, several young Southampton talents are performing well such as Cameron Archer, Sam Amo-Ameyaw, and Tyler Dibling who has been turning heads with his performances in the Premier League. Thus, if Meghoma stayed at the club, he would also highly likely get a lot of first team opportunities as the Saints are currently aiming to find a good balance between attack and defence to start winning a few games in the league. Now, manager Russell Martin has spoken about Meghoma's transfer and revealed the reason why Southampton sold him in this transfer window, saying,
The reason why Southampton decided to sell young prodigy
"Our preference would have been Jayden accepting the contract that we offered, which was a really good one for a player of his age.
- Russell Martin
Jayden has gone somewhere where he thinks he might get more opportunity earlier. I disagreed with him but we will have to wait and see."
Martin highlighted the fact that Southampton offered a new contract to Meghoma, however, he went to Brentford for getting earlier Premier League opportunities as he would have at Saints while playing as a second choice left back after Kyle Walker-Peters. Meanwhile, Southampton are working towards improving their overall performance as they have faced four consecutive Premier League defeats and thus, should return to winning ways quickly otherwise they would be in a relegation battle towards the end of the season. In the next match, the Saints will play Everton in the third round of the Carabao Cup, with an aim to take a win and advance to the next round and get a good momentum for the upcoming Premier League matches as well.
