Southampton head coach Tonda Eckert will have done plenty of head-scratching ahead of today's playoff semi-final first-leg encounter against Middlesbrough.

Saints' young German coach will have both Jack Stephens and Kuryu Matsuki available for selection again after both players recovered from injuries which kept them out of the Preston North End Championship curtain-closer.

Despite allegations being made against Southampton of spying on Boro's training sessions, the Saints have quite a settled side, and Eckert has no intention of coming away from the Riverside with anything less than an advantage to take into the home leg on Tuesday.

Predicted Saints lineup (4-2-3-1)

Goalkeeper and defenders

Goalkeeper - Daniel Peretz: Southampton’s number one has been an ever-present in goal since his arrival in January. The Israeli's form has been the most significant factor in the Saints' surge up the Championship table.

Right back - James Bree: Bree's return from being on loan at Charlton has aligned with Southampton's unbeaten run, and that is no coincidence. He will be able to get forward against Boro, whose attacks are mostly concentrated down the right side.

Centre back - Taylor Harwood-Bellis: THB has been one of the best defenders in the Championship since the turn of the year, and he is vital at the back for Saints. Most attacks start with the former Manchester City player, and he is capable of popping up with a vital goal or two.

Centre back - Jack Stephens: The captain has flipped the narrative this season and has become one of the team's key players. He was missed at Wembley, although Nathan Wood stepped in admirably.

Left back - Ryan Manning: A difficult decision awaits Tonda Eckert for the left-back slot. Welington played well in the FA Cup semi-final and again at Preston. His pace against the overlapping duo of Boro's Callum Brittain and Morgan Whittaker could be useful, as could Manning's dead-ball delivery.

Midfielders

Centre midfielder - Flynn Downes: Rested through suspension, Saints' very own David Batty is raring and ready to go. Downes is made for games like these, and his return to action today is a given.

Centre midfielder - Casper Jander: Jander is in the running for Saints' player of the season and rightly so. He is a Premier League player in waiting and proved it again in the semi-final against City. The German played the full ninety minutes against Preston but has had a full week to recover.

Attacking Centre midfielder - Finn Azaz: Saints' goalscorer at Wembley, Azaz has a point to prove against his former employer. Big games demand big moments. Azaz is capable of delivering those.

Attackers

Left attacking midfielder - Léo Scienza: Southampton’s Brazilian star could be the difference-maker today. Callum Brittain's eagerness to get forward might be checked by Scienza's tendency to stay upfield in defensive transitions.

Right attacking midfielder - Samuel Edozie: The Southampton boss is capable of springing a surprise or two, and Edozie could be a big one for today's match. Fellows has been out of form for some time, and Kuryu Matsuki may be held back until Tuesday.

Striker - Cyle Larin: The Saints setup may steer Eckert towards selecting the Canadian over the Lochness Drogba. Larin's holdup play gives the Saints better options to play to his strengths.
