Rivals experience suggests Saints must not worry Carabao Cup shortcomings

Southampton aren't executing their plans well on the matchday but the fans must glance at rivals too.

It was Northampton Town's ground and there wasn't an instance where they didn't strode with pride in front of Southampton. The Saints weren't all heads in hands going down the tunnel but knew they couldn't walk past their opponents even with a goal up.

Yet, Southampton fans should let go of this "we are awful" syndrome because someone's lament is always anybody's painful wish. I get it, comparisons should only be done with ourselves but keeping track of other teams is okay every once in a while.

Two of Saints rivals had an uneventful Carabao Cup night

So, we have Ipswich Town for a start. Reasons? Former Championship manager Tony Pulis couldn't stop being praiseful of them and like him, absolutely everyone followed into the notion that the Tractor Boys will hold their campaign's keys with them.

However, there's one correction as penalties seem to be deciding their fate. Took one flawlessly and grabbed a fighting point, missed a couple and were thumped out of the Cup.

Here at Southampton, we have Ryan Manning's set pieces to fall upon, so, Ipswich Town are not ahead of Will Still's men when it comes to pushing above in crunch situations.

Off to local neighbours Portsmouth, who will still be stomaching the fact that they were eliminated by a third tier rival while Southampton didn't. And it doesn't get more embarrassing than bowing down the tournament on home turf.

Southampton admired youngster Andre Garcia was one of the goalscorers there, and it will be an interesting sight if he wears the Saints badge in the future as a new signing. You can tell, Southampton fans will be eager to taunt the Pompeys then, but those scenes will need waiting and realistically, a lot of it.
