Russell Martin is toying with the idea of completing his career transfer hat-trick of recruiting last season's best Southampton player Flynn Downes at Rangers.

Nowadays, the Southampton to Rangers career path is enthusiastically doing the speculative rounds and for obvious Russell Martin reasons. Similar to the Saints, their Scottish counterparts don't belong to the heavy spending elite, meaning the handful of promising Southampton players won't be a part of this potential "swoop in the making".

Nevertheless, there could be some difference makers exchanging shirts soon, and one of them has even won the annual accolade of the best Saints player too. First things first, that's not Mateus Fernandes so we don't need to worry much, Southampton fans.

Downes can complete a hat-trick of transfer reunions with Martin

Instead, that name is Flynn Downes who received that distinction last year. According to a report from the Scottish Sun, Russell Martin is pondering over the idea of linking up with Downes for the third time in his brief coaching career.

Well, don't you think Downes just seems to be the perfect leader material Martin always craves for? Last year, Martin vouched for his permanent signing and fast forward to the initial stages of the Premier League and the 26-year-old was the best Saints midfielder by far.

Wish, that could be said for the remainder of the season as well but everyone knows how Downes fared under both Juric and Rusk. Hence, the box-to-box playmaker is an efficient anchor in the middle of the park but there aren't any guarantees whether Still would prefer his midfielders to remain limited there every time.

So, a sale is an enticing prospect for Southampton but let's see what the eventual decision makers think on this matter. After all, Downes leaving could impact Mateus Fernandes transfer future as well.
