Southampton might be active in the January transfer window. Russell Martin has hinted at one position which the Saints must strengthen in.
Last weekend, Southampton got their first win of the Premier League season. While some might feel like it's too late, nobody can deny that there is now something to build on.
If Southampton can pick up another win this weekend against Wolves, they will be putting themselves in great stead to build some momentum. They cannot follow up the win with a poor result or it will be back to square one, unfortunately.
Still, now is not the time for negativity. Southampton's result at the weekend was pretty flawless, after all. Everything that Russell Martin's men could control, they controlled.
Russell Martin hints at major Southampton transfer need in January
Speaking after the match, Southampton boss Russell Martin was understandably jubilant to have picked up the win. However, he did pinpoint one area of concern within his team.
According to the Daily Echo, Russell Martin is not completely satisfied with the amount of support Cameron Archer is getting from wide positions. While he has praised Ryan Manning for playing out of position, he has hinted it is not sustainable.
In his own words, Martin said: "Ryan Manning's out there and is doing a great job for us because he's not a natural winger. needs a bit more support than he's getting."
Then, Martin said: "We'll get there. That's the process and we'll show them the clips and we'll try and learn from that. We got there (the box) a lot against Everton."
Martin heaped a lot of praise on his team and even after these comments, he praised Archer for his work which enabled Armstrong to score his goal. Without a doubt, then, Martin envisions a Southampton side which centres around Archer. It's clear to see why.
It is certainly true that Southampton could benefit from more creativity from wide positions, to match that already shown by Kyle Walker-Peters. This way, they would have another route to swinging the ball into the box. This would only carve more opportunities for the Saints going forward.
Southampton fans hope that Martin is sending a cryptic message to the Southampton owners. If his vision is to be backed, then Sport Republic must consider bringing in a creative outlet from out wide.
Time will tell if this is part of the January transfer plan. For now, the Saints must embrace that winning feeling being back.
