Ryan Manning just asked Santa for a Christmas miracle this weekend

After Saturday's defeat at Carrow Road, Southampton's Ryan Manning shared what he thinks it will take for Saints to overcome Coventry City this weekend.

I'll leave it to you to decide if you think Ryan Manning is on Santa's 'naughty or nice' list, but you have to admit that his goal contributions for Southampton this season have been nothing short of spectacular.

First, his free-kick equaliser in the opening game of the season against Wrexham flew in from long range and then he repeated the trick away at Watford, albeit from slightly closer range.

At Charlton, the Republic of Ireland international arrived late in the box to crash a close range header in off the crossbar, putting his team a goal ahead in what would turn out to be a rout at the Valley.

On Saturday at Norwich, Manning took advantage of a combination of tenacity and luck to set himself up for a Christmas cracker from 25-yards out. His low effort flew in to the bottom right hand corner to level the contest before Norwich grabbed their winner through Jovon Makama.

After the defeat, Ryan Manning turned his attention to next Saturday's visit of league leaders Coventry City to St Mary's.

According to Manning, one thing is vital

“I think it's all teed up to be a brilliant game,“ Manning told the Daily Echo.

“But I think the importance of a clean sheet is massive, especially this week. A clean sheet is vital.“

Considering his team has only managed two clean sheets all season, against struggling opposition and only once under Tonda Eckert, wishing for a clean sheet is a Christmas miracle that not even Santa could deliver.

Although Southampton's average goals conceded has fallen under Eckert, from 1.46 to 1.25 goals per match, the Saints are still struggling to keep the ball out of their own net. On a positive note, the problem is alleviated at home where Southampton have conceded an average of just a goal per game.

Shut outs against Swansea City, Portsmouth, and Leicester City show that what Manning is asking for isn't impossible. But it is highly unlikely.

Frank Lampard's team has the best record in the Championship

Coventry have the best scoring record in the division and their average goal tally away from home is 2.36 goals per game.

The idea that the Southampton back three can keep Frank Lampard's men out is almost laughable. Saints have struggled to prevent crosses coming in and with a goalkeeper who doesn't command the six-yard box at all, that has led to goals conceded in recent matches.

Perhaps, Southampton's best chance of keeping a clean sheet against Coventry is to play on the front foot and maintain a high block. Gavin Bazunu likes to play as a sweeper keeper so that would suit him. Add Joshua Quarshie's pace into the back three for insurance and Saints, in theory, could keep the sky blues out.

I wouldn't bet on it though. Manning might need to think of something else to go on his Christmas wish list - like being handed the responsibility to take penalties, for starters.
