Saints fans can't ignore building momentum around a strong managerial candidate

Southampton appear likely to appoint Tonda Eckert in a promoted role any day soon, but there is one candidate who seems to be gaining momentum.

There's been more names thrown into the mix for the vacant managerial position than the number of different flavoured jelly beans.

Will Still's departure has brought on a clamour for potential replacements beyond the promotion of the current interim manger who, to be fair to him, has managed to steer the team to back-to-back victories and six much needed points.

Southampton fans have voiced their frustration at the board. They have been left frustrated at the state of the club just 18 months after the Saints were promoted to the Premier League.

The fans have also made it clear that Gary O'Neil would never be accepted by them as a serious candidate for the role. O'Neil's managerial record has not been particularly good and then there's the obvious flaw of having played for you know who!

Brendan Rodgers would probably perceive Southampton as a team that fall beneath his level of experience and Carlos Corberán is still in a job at Valencia, although hanging on by a thread.

Ole was sacked by an unsympathetic board

Attention has slowly turned to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who was sacked by Besiktas at the end of August having taken charge of 29 matches for the Turkish Süpa Lig outfit. Solskjaer could only manage a distant fourth placed finish with the side from the capital despite beating both Fenerbahçe and Galatasaray over the course of the season.

Failure to reach the league stages of either the UEFA Europa League or the UEFA Conference League was enough for the board to send Ole packing. He has since picked up a role as a match analyst for UEFA but has reportedly said that he would consider a job in England managing a mid-table Championship team.

Saints may not strictly speaking be a mid-table Championship side but they are a big enough club to be considered to be above that level.

Solskjaer may consider himself a little unlucky with the draw in the second qualifying round of the Europa League. Shaktar Donetsk was probably the most tricky opponent in the hat.

However, losing over two legs to Lausanne-Sport of Switzerland meant that Besiktas would not feature in the league stage of the UEFA Conference League either, which was simply not good enough.

Solskjaer brings all this experience

None of this makes Solskjaer a bad fit for Southampton though and he would bring considerable experience to St Mary's were he to be appointed.

149 matches in charge at Manchester United is not to be sniffed at and history will show that he didn't do too bad a job given the circumstances.

The former Champions League winner (as a player) has won two titles as a manager in Norway with Molde and he has managed in the Premier League at Cardiff City. He has finished second in the Premier League and lost in the Europa League final as manager of United.

Solskjaer's points per game average is much higher than some of his rivals for the job and he could be a better fit than some might give him credit for.

Although there is a bit of momentum growing behind the idea of the Norweigian becoming the next Saints boss, there are precious few solid leads and his appointment seems a little off brand for Sport Republic.
