Saints hoping to land 26-year-old attacker signing out of nowhere

Southampton are plotting an out of the box transfer for forward Morlaye Sylla, which could give them more helping hands in attack.

Yesterday's Moussa Djenepo update sent the Southampton fans in ecstasy when they came to know their previous attacker isn't making them look the worst buyers in England. Else, the 27-year-old joining Leeds for next to nothing would have been utter mockery of the Saints forward additions.

On the left, the reinforcements have been so laughable that Sadio Mane still comes to mind as the last wide attacker who actually thrived in the position. Else, it's been a long string containing forgettable buys like Kamaldeen Sulemana, Maxwel Cornet and Mislav Orsic who differed only by price-tags, not by match performances.

Right now, Samuel Edozie is looking sharp in preseason but someday, a rich vein of form in the Premier League will be required for Saints fans to muster trust in him.

Sylla's playing time race with Edozie can improve Saints scoring

In the meantime, a headline grabbing Championship run should be the minimum Edozie must offer, but Southampton's board seem to want more contributions from their left forwards. In the sense that they wish to put backup alternatives in place, to deal with common issues around form and fitness.

Out of contract winger Morlaye Sylla could provide that safety net in attack, and Africa Foot has even hinted at Saints initial transfer moves too.

Well, Sylla's rumour has quite come as a surprise, but his experience in the Portuguese top-flight is indeed impeccable, if not outstanding. Simply put, Sylla may find the back of the net only here and there, but his presence will give more solutions to Still to unlock the toughest of the Championship's defences.

Plus, a healthy competition in the front-line always remains the icing on the cake. One, which Southampton must preserve in their squad to compete on all fronts.
