Southampton fans are bracing themselves for the prospect of watching towering strikers like Ross Stewart and Lawrence Shankland in action but there is still an attacking void that can come to haunt them if not resolved properly.
A goal against Arsenal is a dream for many Premier League debut campaigners, but a select few like Ross Stewart can boast of fulfilling it.
Agreed, the 29-year-old may have played his last English top-flight game but that performance will surely bring him more Championship responsibilities at St. Mary's. Maybe alongside his Scottish counterpart Lawrence Shankland, too.
Now, the Saints have a rough idea of what to fairly expect from Stewart but the towering duo lining up together is a less talked scenario, so far. And going by fan pundit Martin Sanders' comments, they might fill only one attacking spot up front.
In his own words, Football League World quoted Martin saying: "We need somebody that's going to score goals, we need somebody that's going to back up Ross Stewart."
Shankland and Stewart have had large share of struggles in recent memory
On paper, Shankland could be a like for like understudy but is it enough for the goalscoring needs? Honestly, doesn't seem so.
That's because Stewart's fitness has held him back in the past and there will always be those recovery fears with him. Moving to Shankland, it's crystal clear that he is coming on the back of a rather quiet season in front of goal than what he is usually capable of doing.
Thus, throwing him crucial Championship assignments one after the other where Shankland is already unfamiliar, is only a recipe of scoring issues in the making.
Even if Saints recall the previous Championship journey, the club had a proven Premier League hitman Che Adams. Though Armstrong topped the scoring charts, Adams was crucial to guide the front three which is a profile Southampton are lacking at the moment.
Hence, an all-round number nine like William Boving is required but will Southampton manage to advance on that deal remains to be seen.
