Simon Rusk admits taking Jay Robinson risk that didn't pay off

Jay Robinson was left out of the under 21s playoff final against Manchester City to let him prepare for the Arsenal fixture.

At the moment, Sunderland's last-gasp promotion winner is the buzzing talking point across English football. Honestly, Wembley seems to be on a fairytale spree of producing such epic nights one after the other.

First Newcastle, then Crystal Palace and now Sunderland, but, this wasn't the end of finals action for the week. That's because the Premier League 2 also saw a victorious evening but that was a harsh one for the runners-up Saints.

Southampton's U21 team has played arguably the most dominating brand of football in the age level competition but going all the way wasn't just meant to be. Or it can even be said that the Saints took a crucial risk which didn't pay off on this occasion.

Jay Robinson stance proved costly for Southampton U21s

Now, last month, Southampton handed a first-team shirt to Jay Robinson and entirely cut off his ties with the youth side. Plus, the worst part was they rigidly stood their ground and didn't select him for that one game which denied them the Premier League 2 title.

Narrating the reason behind this harsh call to the Daily Echo, Simon Rusk pinpointed to the Arsenal fixture: "We've got a big game Sunday, so completely normal stuff from that point of view."

Well, Rusk has a good amount of forwards, though not in form, to handpick his strongest front three. So, relying on Robinson's shoulders shouldn't be a must unless the plan is to give him half an hour or more at St. Mary's.

Even then, starting in the midweek title decider wouldn't have disturbed the three-day recovery schedule, isn't it?

Anyways, let's focus on today and see whether Rusk goes on a fully rotated lineup or plays all of his non-negotiable starters and leaves this Robinson decision even more baffling for the home fans.
