Will Still is having a season to forget. After he was hired as the Southampton boss, replacing the woeful Ivan Jurić, the feeling was that it could only get better for Southampton.
But that couldn't be further from the truth.
In the Championship, the Saints have started the season appallingly. They are 16th, and have only won two out of a possible 10 games this season.
For a team that was tipped to gain automatic promotion back to the Premier League, this is simply inexcusable. Frankly, Southampton needs to hang its head in shame, and nobody affiliated with the club can be proud of the start of this season.
The simple real reason why Will Still sucks at Southampton
For whatever reason, Will Still is flat-out refusing to play some of his more experienced players. The two most glaring examples are Joe Aribo and Sam Edozie.
In fairness to Still, he hasn't shied away from this decision and he has openly addressed it in a public forum.
Before the weekend's home fixture against Swansea, which the Saints lost embarrassingly despite taking 21 shots, Will Still said that the reason why Aribo and Edozie hadn't played this season is due to the competition in the squad.
According to the Daily Echo, Still said: "They're still with us but they've missed a whole chunk of pre-season, and we have to be fair and honest with everyone. Who are you taking out? Are you going to say to Leo [Scienza], Tom Fellows, Finn [Azaz] or Jay Robinson, you're out because Sam Edozie's back in?"
We can only really pay attention to the second part of that quotation. The first is garbage filler because, let's face it, a lack of pre-season is a valid excuse for missing one or two games at the start of the season, not 10.
And Still is right. It would be unfair for those players to miss out purely because a better player just came back. But life's unfair, and any manager who shies away from making unfair decisions is not a manager who will ever reach the top.
Southampton is clearly shockingly bad. If anything, they should be trying to avoid relegation at this point, rather than fighting for promotion. Until the team changes, the results won't.
And that's easy for us fans to say. There's a reason why all we do is watch games, rather than coach them. But this part can't be rocket science - Championship experience counts for something when, you know, you're playing in the Championship.
