Saints board member Johannes Spors previously favoured the idea of retaining young prodigies, but now Southampton seems to be deviating away from his comments.
To this point, Southampton fans and the club have seen eye to eye on every exit, both the done deals and the ones nearly over the line. No issues so far, but now the Saints are about to commit one selling mistake they themselves assured not to do anymore.
It's about right footed attacker Samuel Edozie, who is becoming a secondary choice behind Jay Robinson but it's preseason after all. Yes, he could have been dropped down the pecking order in the Championship or used as a super substitute until he gained Will Still's confidence, but directly shifting him away is quite an impatient direction Southampton are taking.
In his own words, Sacha Tavolieri gave the surprising Edozie update saying: "Southampton FC's left winger is close to joining Racing Strasbourg. Transfer final."
Southampton treats Samuel Edozie similar to Jayden Meghoma
For the sake of it, let's assume Strasbourg were overpaying for the 22-year-old but if one remembers, Johannes Spors wasn't in favour of this quick talent cash-in approach. Almost four months ago, Spors was a new member in the Saints boardroom but wasted no time in promising the Southampton faithful not to give the green light for more Jayden Meghoma-like sales.
It felt encouraging to hear that firm stance in maintaining hold of promising starlets, who may be one campaign away from becoming first team stars at St. Mary's.
The reality, however, isn't that pleasing in the case of Edozie. If Spors and the other transfer chiefs had second thoughts about his playing ability, then it's a different picture.
That possibility can only be answered in the future, but as of now, Edozie had a significantly bright career lying for him at Southampton.
