Southampton at risk of being snubbed as Huddersfield move for David Wagner

David Wagner was recently linked to the Southampton opening, but the Saints might need to act fast, as he's already been approached by his former side Huddersfield Town.

Last week, David Wagner entered the fray to potentially replace Ivan Juric as the long-term Southampton manager. At the time, we described his experience as "cracking the Championship code", which was an understatement, considering he was promoted with Huddersfield of all teams.

Quite an achievement was noticed at the time, of course, but it seems even more impressive in hindsight. Now, Huddersfield are in League One, two divisions below the Premier League. So, for Wagner to be coaching Premier League football with them at one stage, it was incredible.

Nevertheless, Southampton are currently interested in him as an option. That's it - Interest, nothing more, nothing less.

However, Southampton find themselves at risk of being pipped to the post by a team that David Wagner knows personally, Huddersfield.

Southampton risk being snubbed as Huddersfield move for David Wagner

According to a report by talkSPORT journalist Alex Crook, Huddersfield Town have offered an opportunity for David Wagner to return as their manager. His response is not yet known.

David Wagner is likely to have a few different options as he seeks his next adventure. If he wants a head start on returning to the Premier League, then Southampton will shine for him. However, if he is sentimental and wants to take on a familiar project, then his heart will be warmed by Huddersfield.

So, should Southampton be concerned? Of course, they should, if they want to hire David Wagner, that is.

The Saints are afforded the luxury of time, with the Premier League season not being over yet. However, they mustn't take too much advantage of that time.

If an opportunity presents itself to Southampton and they want to pursue it, then there's no harm in completing a task before the deadline. If only my student self took that advice.

And David Wagner is one of those opportunities that Southampton should seriously consider, at least. As mentioned, he's a manager with great Championship pedigree already, and Premier League experience.

Those are two things that Southampton hires of late have lacked, so he would already be an immediate improvement over the recent departure of Ivan Juric. It makes sense to hire Wagner, which unfortunately means that Southampton likely won't make the action.
