Southampton might beat Derby to the worst Premier League team ever
By Kian Long
Southampton have been atrocious this season. That said, might they be on track to beat Derby County to being the worst Premier League team ever?
Having played 15 games this season, Southampton have picked up only five points. It has been a disastrous start to life back in the Premier League for the Saints.
As it stands, Russell Martin does not appear to be in immediate danger. However, the more stubborn he becomes and the worse Southampton play, the more pressure is piled onto him by Southampton fans.
At the weekend, Southampton conceded to Aston Villa and did not reply. In fact, the Saints didn't even register a shot on target, showing a sheer subservient attitude away from home.
Southampton might beat Derby to the worst Premier League team ever
Southampton have been tipped by Daily Mail as being in danger of becoming the worst Premier League team of all-time. Currently, the record (if you can even call it that) is held by Derby County, who picked up shameful 11 points in the 2007/08 season.
17 years later, Southampton might be on track to banish that record and become the worst Premier League team ever. If they don't pick up a point in the next five games (which isn't beyond the realms of possibility), then the Saints would be projected a worse finish than Derby did.
Of course, we are speaking hypotheticals here. It is also worth noting that the publication has made a name for itself for its sensationalist headlines and making outlandish claims. Therefore, it's not a surprise to see they have jumped the gun here.
Nobody knows what Southampton will produce over the next handful of games. We can cross our fingers and our toes that the Saints will go on a nice streak but we cannot count on it. In fact, the Saints have given every reason to believe the opposite.
The reason why the Rams set the record of the worst Premier League season ever, and why it is yet to be beaten almost two decades on, is because they really were poor. That seems like a compliment, actually!
Therefore, it might seem unfair for these comparisons to be drawn this early on. I do believe that even Derby fans of the time period would attest and claim that no side will ever be as bad as they were back then. However, it is quite telling that Southampton have been compared to the "incomparable."
