Southampton could stumble to another loss against Ipswich looking at the head-to-head record

Another huge game awaits Southampton in the Championship this mid-week, as the Saints are thrown straight back into the promotion deep-end against Ipswich Town.

Tonda Eckert's men must put their FA Cup semi-final agony against Manchester City firmly to one side, with a win against Ipswich meaning they'd be only one point off the automatic promotion positions, heading into a barmy final day.

Of course, a loss would also completely kill off their chances of disrupting the automatic promotion party, with Eckert needing his players to be firing on all cylinders from minute one of the Tuesday night clash, to get the better of Kieran McKenna's Tractor Boys.

The players who must show up against Ipswich

Finn Azaz will be hoping he can follow up his sublime Wembley heroics with another crucial goal for his promotion-chasing side on Tuesday night.

If he were to power an opportunity home against the visitors from Suffolk, the dazzling Irishman would bump up his Championship goal tally for the season to a stunning 12, with Azaz picking up an assist the last time Eckert's men won on their own patch in the second tier, in a slim 2-1 win over Derby County.

He did fail to pick up a goal contribution against Swansea City and Bristol City, though, so he will be looking to break his league duck on the big occasion.

Eckert will also be hoping some more Leo Scienza magic is on display against McKenna and Co, with the Brazilian's quick feet hopefully unlocking the stern Ipswich defence, who kept a clean sheet last time out, on their travels to West Bromwich Albion.

Caspar Jander will be expecting a starting spot next to the likes of Azaz, too, after classily going about his business at Wembley versus Manchester City.

The midfield battle will be an intriguing one to keep an eye out for at St. Mary's, with Jack Clarke very much a tricky winger, in the same mould as Scienza, alongside Jack Taylor being an energetic presence centrally, like Jander.

If Southampton were to pick up an invaluable win, to take the fight for automatic promotion to the final day, they'd be going against a jinx they hold against the Tractor Boys.

Southampton's poor head-to-head record

Indeed, Southampton haven't beaten Ipswich on their own patch since 2010, which is a staggering statistic to take in.

Earlier in the season, Will Still led the South Coast side to a 1-1 draw at Portman Road, after the Saints did manage to get the better of their Suffolk hosts in the Premier League 2-1, despite finishing rock bottom of the division.

Yet, it's back at St. Mary's where Southampton find Ipswich a troublesome opponent to overcome, with a slim 2-1 win in the FA Cup in 2010, the last time the second-tier giants were victorious against the Tractor Boys at home.

On that day, former West Ham United attacker Michail Antonio would bag the winner for the League One hosts, with Cyle Larin or Ross Stewart hopeful they can be a dramatic matchwinner in a similar vein, when McKenna's automatic promotion favourites leave Suffolk behind, for the South Coast.

After all, curses like this in football are meant to be broken, and there would be no time like the present for Southampton to lift this surprising hex, as the automatic promotion race hopefully goes down to the wire.
