Southampton have a decision to make.
It is not a simple one, and it will shape the squad going forward. The goalkeeper position has become key to the Saints' recent success, with Daniel Peretz replacing Gavin Bazunu.
Aaron Ramsdale is out on loan, and his future is not yet clear. Daniel Peretz has impressed, and there is a feeling that he could be signed permanently. Gavin Bazunu is still at the club and could remain a long-term option if neither Peretz nor Ramsdale stay. George Long has also been around the group, adding depth and character.
That is four goalkeepers and only one shirt.
Promotion changes everything
The situation looks very different depending on where Southampton are next season.
If they are promoted, the club will be in a stronger position with more financial power and more pull in the market. That could make a deal for Daniel Peretz more realistic and more attractive.
He has shown composure and presence and he looks comfortable at this level. He also looks like a goalkeeper who can step up.
Ramsdale’s situation would also come into sharper focus. A Premier League club has different expectations and different demands. Decisions would have to be made in good time, as Ramsdale may wish to stay on Tyneside.
The difference between having a top-class keeper and a Championship-level keeper was made obvious last season, when Southampton were relegated from the Premier League with a paltry points tally.
And things almost got worse at the start of this season when Gavin Bazunu struggled and Alex McCarthy failed to step up again.
Squad depth brings difficult choices
Gavin Bazunu remains an important part of this conversation.
He is still young and still developing, capable of improving. The club have invested in him, but patience among fans has wavered to put it mildly.
George Long adds experience and reliability, and he has done his job when called upon. He may not be the long-term answer, but he has value within the squad. He could be an option if Norwich is prepared to sell and Southampton remain in the Championship.
That leaves Southampton with quite a dilemma.
Too many options can be a problem and not a solution. The club must decide who they trust and who aligns with the team's direction. Johannes Spors will also need to balance the books which won't be easy as Ramsdale is reportedly earning £100,000+ per week.
Promotion would make that decision clearer because it raises the level and defines expectations. It also gives Southampton more control over their income.
Without promotion, choices become harder and compromises may be needed.
This is where good planning matters.
Because the right decision in goal can be the difference between competing and struggling and Southampton now have the chance to get that call right.
