Southampton are building something exciting at St Mary's. Under Tonda Eckert, they have secured a trip to Wembley for an FA Cup semi-final date with Pep Guardiola's Manchester City while simultaneously climbing into the Championship play-off positions from an impossible position.

There is quality in the squad and there is balance and there is real potential to compete at a higher level. But that progress comes with risk because good players attract attention.

Promotion now looks essential

Interest in Leo Scienza is growing, and that should not surprise anyone. He has been one of the most exciting players in the Championship, and he brings creativity, energy, and end product. Despite being overlooked by the EFL for the Championship Player of the Season award, Scienza has topped the ratings for big chances created and shots on target.

So far, links are tenuous and unverified. Bedroom bloggers are making the obvious connections, but nothing concrete has materialised, yet.

Scienza is not alone.

Shea Charles has shown he can dominate games, control the tempo, and step up in big moments. The goals that he scored against Arsenal, Oxford United and Leicester City have been some of Southampton's biggest moments of the season so far.

Charles has been described as having the potential to be world-class. That has got Manchester United interested, according to some sources.

Caspar Jander has developed quickly and looks like a player with a very high ceiling. However, the German midfielder has been homesick, reportedly, and there are Bundesliga clubs sniffing around. Stuttgart are among the new clubs reportedly interested in Jander.

These three are not just good Championship players. They have the necessary quality to become Premier League players.

That is why promotion matters so much to Southampton this season.

Because if Southampton do not go up, it becomes harder to keep them. The Premier League and Bundesliga vultures are already circling, ready to pick the best meat from the bones of the St Mary's carcass, if the club do not get promoted this season.

Keeping the core together

The reality is that if clubs from higher leagues show an interest, players will listen, agents will push their players, and opportunities will open up.

Southampton can try to resist, and they can try to build again next season. But there is always a chance that they won't be able to find players of similar abilities who are available.

Promotion removes that pressure completely.

If Saints go up, they can offer Premier League football, and they can offer a clear pathway. That means that they can keep the group together. That stability is key because success often comes from continuity.

If they do not go up, the situation changes.

Offers will come and they may be difficult to turn down because they could represent both financial value and sporting progression.

Scienza, Charles and Jander are exactly the type of players that bigger clubs look for. They are young, improving, and already performing at a high level.

Southampton have worked hard to assemble this group, and they deserve credit for that. But keeping it together is the next challenge. That is why promotion is not just a target. It is almost a necessity.

Because losing one or two key players can be managed. Losing the core of a developing side is much harder to recover from.

Saints have momentum and they have quality and they have belief.

Now they need the promotion that protects it.
