A day that sparks debate across the fanbase every season; Southampton’s new shirt for the upcoming season has been launched.
For 2025/26, the club went to a throwback style, but Puma have delivered a classic look for the upcoming 2026/27 campaign.
Southampton fans are saying the same thing about the new shirt across social media, drawing comparisons to the shirt from the club’s last Premier League season two years ago.
A throwback… to two years ago
Southampton’s new shirt can be compared closely with the club’s 2024/25 shirt.
Designed with simple red-and-white panel stripes, a boxed-off back for the shirt number, and black sleeves and collar, Saints fans have highlighted similarities between the two.
However, there are clear differences between the 2024/25 and 2026/27 tops.
The 2026/27 shirt has seven vertical stripes on the front, rather than five. The centre stripe is red, rather than white - the correct pattern for a Southampton shirt.
The local P&O Cruises sponsor is vastly better than the betting sponsor from two years ago, and the stripes have darker patterning and continue to the bottom of the shirt, rather than turning inwards on each side.
There are certainly similarities, but to call the new Southampton shirt a repeat of the 2024/25 jersey isn’t quite accurate.
Southampton’s new shirt - a better change
The reaction to Southampton’s new home shirt has been mixed - but not all negative.
The improvements from two years ago are there to see, and the classic look should almost always be worn at St Mary’s.
Fans looking to purchase shirts can do so on the Saints website: £65 for adults and £50 for juniors. It’s a pretty extortionate price.
With pre-season beginning on Thursday at Staplewood, the work ahead of the 2026/27 campaign starts now for Saints head coach Tonda Eckert and his squad.
After a disappointing end to the season, the club are looking to bounce back, with personal record season ticket holder numbers for the upcoming season.
Overall, the new Saints top is an improvement, and one that really epitomises what a Southampton shirt should be. Everybody surrounding the club will be hoping it’s a jersey worn for promotion this season.
