This his been a great few weeks for Ryan Manning. After winning back-to-back matches for Southampton, he's repeated the achievement for the Republic of Ireland.

Although he missed the impressive home victory for the Republic against Portugal, he did participate in the dramatic 3-2 away win in Hungary.

Before Manning left for the international break he recognised that the players and staff had been given a boost by the results against Queens Park Rangers and Sheffield Wednesday.

He said: "During the week before we went away, the two results had naturally given everyone a lift. Everyone comes in eager and is excited to kick-start our season.“

Now, back on the South Coast, Manning has noticed a palpable difference in the attitude around the squad.

“When I came back in today, all the boys were buzzing. There was a bit of banter in the changing room. That's what results do.“ Manning told the Daily Echo.

But Manning isn't getting carried away. He understands the importance of maintaining the momentum that Southampton have built under interim manager Tonda Eckert.

“We have to go out now and back up what we did before, otherwise it's pointless.“

Southampton fans will hope that Manning's realisation is fulfilled. The Saints remain in 17th place in the Championship and seven points below the play-off places.

On Saturday, the Saints head to the Valley to take on Charlton Athletic and former manager, Nathan Jones, in a 12.30 kick-off. A win at the Charlton could set Manning and his Southampton teammates on course for an extended run of good form.

Although Southampton are starting to play better and get results, Manning is under no illusions that the Saints aren't back to the form that they need to be if they are going to compete at the top end of the table.

“We're under no illusions that we aren't back to where we need to be. There's still a long way to go."

Manning is particularly appreciate of the job that Tonda Eckert has done since coming in as interim manager. Manning explained that Eckert had not changed much but has made some minor tweaks that have made a very big difference.

"As far as we're concerned, we're enjoying working with him. I think you see that a lot of the stuff we did at the training ground sort of came to fruition on the pitch," he said of Eckert.

The match against Charlton at the valley could be a spicy affair. Nathan Jones has a lot to prove against the club that only gave him 14 games to show what he could do before dismissing him.
