While Dragan Solak has been regularly quoted in recent weeks about what positions he wants to strengthen at Southampton this summer, he will also know that certain Saints individuals need to be offloaded.

You would imagine that Ben Brereton Diaz would be sold on, with the South Coast club now snapping up Cyle Larin on a permanent deal, while the likes of Aaron Ramsdale and Gavin Bazunu will surely be moved on, too, with George Long's re-entry back into the building.

Alongside those sales possibly taking place, Southampton supporters wouldn't bat an eyelid whatsoever if Juan Larios departed Tonda Eckert's camp during the hectic transfer window, with the Spaniard a forgotten figure on the South Coast.

Larios' failed move to Southampton

Larios was once branded a "brilliant" footballer by ex-Saints boss Russell Martin, but actions speak louder than words.

Joining amongst a wave of Manchester City youngsters entering the Saints ranks in 2022, with the likes of Samuel Edozie moving with the full-back to the South Coast from the illustrious Premier League academy, there would have been a lot of hype that Larios would go on to be a success.

Instead, four years on from his move from the Etihad, he has only made a minimal six first-team appearances for the Saints, with his last first-team outing for Eckert and Co. coming during the 2024/25 campaign.

He has been loaned back out to his native Spain in order to gift the 22-year-old more first-team minutes, but that hasn't gone according to plan either, with Spanish outlet Diario AS blasting his loan stint with Cultural Leonesa in La Liga 2 as "disappointing."

He has also been on the books of Real Zaragoza, and he arguably struggled featuring for David Navarro's men, too, with only three clean sheets collected from 27 starting appearances in the league.

When it comes to Larios, it does just feel as if Southampton is postponing the inevitable, with a permanent move away from St. Mary's suiting all parties at this crossroads in his career, as it's very unlikely he will be able to make the strides required to burst back into the senior picture at St. Mary's.

Reports had indicated that a permanent exit route away from the South Coast could be on the cards for the Saints reject, but a new twist has thrown a spanner into the works.

He must be sold this summer

Reports from Spain stated that La Liga 2 side Cadiz were keen on snapping up the 22-year-old for good to bring his stop-start Southampton career to a final close.

However, as is the nature of the frantic transfer window, a new development has poured cold water over this, with Cadiz's sporting director now looking at alternative targets in the left-back department, instead of taking a punt on the one-time Man City youth prodigy.

This will be a blow to Larios' confidence, and it will also make the Saints a little edgy over whether they can win some money back for their expensive flop, having once forked out a substantial £6m for his services.

With his Southampton contract only in play until 2027, this is the optimum time for Eckert and Co. to cash in, before he winds down his deal on the South Coast.

Hopefully, for the Championship side's sake, and Larios', another suitor comes in to save the day, or Cadiz do end up reigniting their interest, because at the moment, the forgotten full-back has no anchor to call home.
