Southampton must cash in on this flop while they can

While Southampton will be apprehensive about selling the likes of Shea Charles, the Saints must cash in on this flop while they can.

There might be a lack of developments on whether Tonda Eckert is going to be dismissed as Southampton manager or not, but that hasn't stopped the transfer rumour mill from churning out plenty of gossip involving Saints players leaving St Mary's.

Indeed, Leo Scienza's name has been rampantly linked with a move to the Premier League, alongside Shea Charles being tipped to move to Manchester United, with Rangers even throwing their hat into the ring for the former Manchester City academy product.

Alongside players Southampton will be desperately wanting to keep this summer, there are also players they must be urgently wishing they could see the back of.

Aaron Ramsdale certainly falls into that category, you would imagine, with it forgotten about, really, that he is even a part of Eckert's camp.

Ramsdale's Saints struggles

Ramsdale's 2025/26 season had nothing to do with Spygate in the end, with the former Arsenal number one out on loan at Newcastle United for the entire campaign.

Keeping just three clean sheets from 21 appearances is hardly the sort of form that makes the Magpies want to keep him around for good, and he will struggle to slot back into the Saints' first team picture, too, with Ramsdale a seriously underwhelming replacement for Daniel Peretz, who kept nine clean sheets from just two more appearances than he managed at St James' Park.

Amassing just four clean sheets from 32 outings when he was Southampton's chosen first-team stopper during their disastrous relegation season in the Premier League, it just feels like it's in everyone's best interests if there was a severing of the ties this summer.

There is even a faint possibility that Peretz could be returning, despite all the fallout from Spygate.

Therefore, selling Ramsdale on at the first possible opportunity makes sense, and while he has hardly been a convincing stopper in recent times, the Saints could gain a handsome amount of money back for the five-time England international.

They can still cash in...

Paying around the £18m mark for the 28-year-old, heading into the 2024/25 season, now looks like a foolish investment, but there was some method to Southampton's madness at the time.

Before tumbling down the pecking order at Arsenal, Ramsdale did show himself to be an agile keeper you could rely on in pressurised moments, with a competent 32 clean sheets kept across 89 games.

This previous form in the Premier League could tempt a club into gambling on the Saints' number 30, with The Athletic coming out to state that several mid-table top-flight teams wouldn't turn their nose up at the opportunity of landing the Englishman, despite his recent difficulties settling in at St. Mary's and under Eddie Howe's wing.

If Southampton could get anywhere near the £18m they purchased him for only two years ago, they would be laughing all the way to the bank, with that amount put into new signings helping them out massively as they rebuild post-Spygate.

With a reunion for Peretz rumoured, as well, there isn't a place for Ramsdale in the Saints' first team next season, as his brief stay on the South Coast looks likely to come to an end this summer transfer window.
