Southampton must get rid of this flop, no matter what happens with their promotion push.

Now is arguably not the time for doom and gloom talk, as Southampton sit in a pretty sixth position in the Championship.

Indeed, the South Coast giants are also deep in a 14-game unbeaten run in all competitions, as Shea Charles' stunner clinched a 2-0 win over Oxford United, just before the international break.

But, for all the joy currently occurring, there will need to be some difficult conversations in the summer - whether Southampton clinch promotion or not - about some players stuck on the periphery, with no future at St. Mary's visible.

With Daniel Peretz now starring in-between the sticks, amid talk about him potentially making his switch from Bayern Munich permanent, Alex McCarthy will surely be considering what his Saints future looks like.

Moreover, Joe Aribo - who is out on loan at Leicester City - is not getting any younger at 29 years of age, with Eckert likely preferring a fresher talent in Cameron Bragg as a midfield body, over the one-time Rangers star.

Southampton's centre-forward ranks are also tinged in doubt, heading into the 2026/27 season, with four-goal hero Cyle Larin only on the books of the Championship club temporarily.

Moreover, Ross Stewart's contract expires at the close of the season, with his regular injury difficulties souring his instinctive finishing ability.

Has the door been completely shut on Ben Brereton Diaz?

Amazingly, it's been forgotten about that the Chilean remains on the Southampton books, as he plies his trade on loan with the Saints' promotion rivals, Derby County.

The £7m splashed on his services in 2024 will still irk those at St. Mary's, two years on, and based on his goal-shy performances for the Rams, he won't be a saving grace up top, anytime soon.

Southampton must permanently ditch Brereton Diaz

Awkwardly, Brereton Diaz doesn't look as if he will fit into either outcome Southampton faces at the end of the season.

He has already shown himself to be out of his depth in the top division with the Saints after all, with ten appearances passing the feeble attacker by, without a single goal coming his way, as relegation was unfortunately stomached.

He does have somewhat of a deadly reputation in the Championship, with 36 league goals put away across two seasons with ex-employers Blackburn Rovers, but he has struggled since his explosive Championship goalscoring exploits at the Riverside Stadium won him an unexpected switch to La Liga with Villarreal.

Out on loan with Sheffield United, and now Derby County, Brereton Diaz has only managed to bag an unremarkable nine strikes from his last 52 outings in the tiring division.

Under John Eustace's wing, he has wasted nine big chances, too, from his 33 Championship starts, with Southampton unlikely to give him another shot to impress, if they remain in the second tier, as his wastefulness could cost another promotion push.

If Southampton could reverse time, they'd likely not drop £7m on the 26-year-old's signature in such a flash.

A permanent severing of the ties might well happen in the off-season, as Southampton prepare for a transfer window of significant change, away from just Brereton Diaz's situation.
