Reliable journalist David Ornstein says that Southampton are considering Kasper Hjulmand to replace Russell Martin as Saints boss.

Southampton announced at the weekend that they had parted ways with Russell Martin. The young manager led Southampton to some astonishing moments, leaving behind some great memories. However, the decision had to be made after his failure to adapt to the Premier League.

Now, Southampton find themselves in the difficult position of replacing him. Unfortunately, the manager's market is not kind to clubs like Southampton who are seeking a new hire.

Nevertheless, Southampton appear to be keeping their options open. Now, David Ornstein has revealed his own findings.

Southampton consider Kasper Hjulmand to replace Russell Martin

According to journalist David Ornstein, speaking to NBC Sports (quoted by Give Me Sport), Southampton are considering other options alongside Danny Rohl. They have been linked to the former Denmark coach Kasper Hjulmand.

In his own words, Ornstein said: "There will be other names in the frame too. He's quite young and inexperienced, the likes of Kasper Hjulmand, who was the Denmark coach. He's now out of work. Southampton have looked at him in the past.

Hjulmand is a manager with great experience at a high level. In 2014, he was announced as the new manager of German club Mainz. Then, he spent four great years as the manager of the Denmark international team from 2020-2024.

Look, there is the obvious argument of international football being different to club football. This is true, and I would be remiss not to mention it. It must be stated that the last time Hjulmand managed a domestic club was in 2019, when he oversaw Nordsjælland.

On this note, Southampton's position must be considered. They are seeking to avoid relegation and they are not in a promising place to achieve this goal. So, are they really in a position where they can take a gamble on managers such as Hjulmand?

Well, Hjulmand is not the be-all or end-all. Of course, we won't deny his credentials as a manager since he is clearly held in high regard at his former positions. However, he is not the only option.

As it stands, Sheffield Wednesday manager Danny Rohl, who Southampton fans know very well, is the favourite to replace Russell Martin at Southampton. It is common practice for clubs to line up their options since nothing is promised in this sport.
