That one's down for the week of the 24th August, so there's not long before Tonda Eckert's side are back in Carabao Cup action.
A winning start worth building on
The Saints are here on merit after a 2-0 win at Colchester United on Saturday afternoon. Cyle Larin settled a tight match with a header off the bench, then Romeo Akachukwu nabbed his first senior Southampton goal in stoppage time. Job done, if not much of a spectacle.
Saints Marching picked over the five things learnt from a comfortable night against League Two opposition at the JobServe Community Stadium.
It wasn't vintage, but a strong Saints side got through, while Larin and Azaz banked vital minutes. A cup run makes a handy distraction from the Championship grind, too. That four-point deduction still needs chipping away at once the league gets underway at Watford on Sunday.
Once Southampton's first home game of the season is out of the way, focus will shift to West Ham in the cup. Expect Eckert to shuffle the pack again for that one.
