Southampton have reportedly turned to Old Trafford for their newest target. He's a 19-year-old right-back that United think highly of.
Why Southampton fancy the teenager
Jaydan Kamason is the teenager in question, with the interest reported by the Daily Mail. The England youth international lit up United's pre-season, none more so than the 5-0 rout of Rosenborg.
His backstory has a proper ring to it. Kamason joined United's Emerging Talent Programme at ten from grassroots side Stockport Vikings, then became the first of his intake to sign scholarship forms at the club.
Saints face a queue, though. Preston, Blackburn, Bristol City and Sheffield Wednesday all fancy him on loan, and there is interest from abroad on top.
United are in no rush, either. Kamason is tied down to 2028, and Michael Carrick's staff rate him enough that he may stay in and around the squad until January.
He has been handed minutes this pre-season while Diogo Dalot and Noussair Mazraoui rest. United want a longer look before cashing in on a homegrown talent.
Where would he actually fit at Staplewood
Here's the twist. Right-back caved in on Southampton last season, so the interest reads far smarter than it first looks.
Mads Roerslev spent most of 2025/26 sidelined, an injury-hit debut year after his summer move from Brentford. Without him, Saints creaked badly on that side.
Eckert even reshaped to a 3-4-3 at times, a back three to hide the lack of a recognised right-back. Bree was the eventual fix.
He was recalled early from a loan at Charlton Athletic to steady the flank. Saints Marching tied that scramble to the club's shaky squad planning.
So where does Jaydan Kamason land in all that? Most likely as insurance and depth, a body to bulk out the under-21s and cover a position that has burned them once already.
There's a bolder read, too. If the teenager settles fast, he could push Bree rather than sit behind him, and Roerslev's fitness is no certainty.
The academy angle backs it up. Saints Marching has captured the buzz around the academy, and a permanent teen signing would feed that same pipeline.
A spell around Roerslev and Bree would sharpen Kamason, and minutes could follow if either man stumbles. That surely beats scrapping for seniority in the Old Trafford queue.
Verdict:Â a shrewd, low-risk move for a spot that let Saints down last season, if the fee stays sensible.
Likelihood:Â slim in the short term, with United set on keeping him at Old Trafford until at least January.
