Despite early warning signs regarding his form in the Netherlands, Cyle Larin has been nothing short of brilliant since signing for Southampton in January.

The 31-year-old Canadian has scored eight times in nine starts for the Saints, soaring up the charts to just three goals behind joint top-scorers Adam Armstrong and Finn Azaz - both of whom started the season at the club.

New information on Southampton’s loan-to-buy deal has come out - making Larin’s potential future at the club a whole lot clearer.

Southampton handed Larin transfer boost

Southampton’s January loan deal with Spanish side Mallorca included a £3.4m obligation to buy, which will automatically be triggered if the Saints achieve promotion this season, reports Jack Rosser for The Sun.

Even if Tonda Eckert’s side doesn’t achieve promotion, the buy option will remain for Larin, which Southampton would be keen to trigger.

This news will add an even greater hunger for Canadian forward Larin to win promotion through the playoffs with Southampton this month, knowing he will get a move away from Spain, where he is seemingly unwanted if they do so.

Larin has been a great loan - despite early doubts

Southampton’s signing of Cyle Larin in January followed the sale of top scorer Adam Armstrong, and looked extremely underwhelming at the time.

But Larin has proved to be a real coup, providing a similar option up front to Ross Stewart, and adding an extra dimension to the Saints' attack. Against Middlesbrough in the playoffs, who will force Southampton to play long, Larin’s hold-up play will be key.

And as well as the presence he provides, Larin has been a reliable source of goals - no player in the 2025/26 Championship season who played over 800 minutes had a better goals per ninety ratio than the Canadian, who averaged 0.84 - almost a goal a game.

For over half the price they bought flop signing Damion Downs last summer, Southampton will sign a better player should they win promotion to the Premier League. It’s a hell of a steal.

Despite being 31 years old and in the latter stages of his career, Cyle Larin appears to be hungry to reach the Premier League.

Upon joining Southampton on deadline day in February, who were mid-table at the time, he said, “I think seven points is nothing to reach the play-offs. In the Championship, it changes very fast. On paper, Southampton are outplaying a lot of teams.”

How right he was.
