Southampton have appointed former player and club legend Matt Le Tissier to a formal club advisory role, according to reports.

The club have brought 'Le God' in as an advisor to the board and that could work well for everyone.

Le Tissier knows the club inside out, understands the fans, and he has seen football at the highest level. That knowledge could make a difference because decisions at board level shape everything that happens on the pitch.

Saints now have a voice who understands what it means to wear the shirt. That should help guide decisions and keep the club grounded.

According to reports, Le Tissier had already been supporting the board as an informal advisor and could have been behind the club's decision to recruit a goalkeeper and an experienced centre-forward in the January window.

Technical director Johannes Spors, appointed in February 2025, leads the club's football department and has shaped its new-look recruitment team, including the appointment of Le Tissier.

A fresh role with real purpose

This is also a chance for Le Tissier. He has already been involved informally, and now the role is official. That gives him structure, responsibility, and a platform to contribute.

It is a different challenge from playing or coaching, but it is vitally important because football clubs need strong voices both behind the scenes and on the pitch.

Guenrsey-born Le Tissier, who played eight times for England, was formerly a club ambassador for Saints, and an associate director at non-league Sholing.

Le Tissier scored 209 goals and made 462 appearances in a professional career that spanned three decades. He appeared to be carrying the club at times. That experience cannot be taught, and it cannot be replaced.

The timing of Le Tissier's appointment is important.

Southampton face a big summer. Whether they are in the Premier League or the Championship, recruitment decisions will be key, and strategy must be clear and aligned.

Including today's FA Cup quarter-final at St Mary's Southampton have a minimum of eight matches remaining. Victory over Arsenal today and a good finish to the Championship season could see the Saints heading to Wembley at least once and as many as three times.

Le Tissier can offer insight and perspective because he has lived the highs and the pressures. He knows what supporters expect, what players might be needed.

He will work alongside chairman Dragan Šolak, CEO Phil Parsons, and technical director Johannes Spors. That group will shape the future, and Le Tissier adds something unique to it.

This does not mean he will make every decision. But it does mean his voice will be heard and that is important.

For the club, it reconnects them with their history. For Le Tissier, it gives him a chance to help shape the future.

That is why it feels like a dream scenario; a win-win for the club and for Le Tiss.

Because when a club legend returns in the right role and at the right time, it can bring balance, identity and direction.

And Southampton need all three as they head into a crucial period.
