Sheffield Wednesday wish to re-sign Stuart Armstrong which will remind Saints of their previous Shea Charles full circle January move.
Let's be honest, all of us Southampton fans have at least once checked back the Championship schedule after the 2-1 preseason start. But, it's been for the modest win that has some worried about facing ex-Saints heroic duo in the season opener.
Thankfully, there's still some relief for the Saints supporters as they witness Stuart Armstrong's situation. With Wrexham moving for a young choice in Lewis O'Brien, their Armstrong interest may be over now.
Guess what? This doesn't change the fact that Southampton will need to face the ex-Saint in the next season. It's just that initially tipped to face his former club on the first matchday, Stuart Armstrong can now face another relegated side in Leicester.
Stuart Armstrong could continue at Sheffield Wednesday next season
As you may have guessed, it's been for Armstrong's Sheffield Wednesday re-link that can see him back to the Owls for another spell.
Recently, journalist Alan Nixon(via Football League World) confirmed Sheffield's Armstrong interest as the midfielder emerges as a brilliant candidate for the Hillsborough club who see its transfer activity restricted to out-of-contract players only.
Honestly, witnessing clubs vying for their former hero would excite all the Saints fans, but what's interesting is that this case must remind them of their winter transfer window.
That's because, noticing the clear parallels, Stuart Armstrong feels close to pulling a replica of Shea Charles' full-circle transfer.
Similar to how Shea Charles moved back and forth from St. Mary's to Sheffield Wednesday, Armstrong feels en route to joining the club within weeks again. The only noticeable difference is that the club hero will likely sign as a free agent rather than Charles' recurring loan scenario.
Well, if this rumour goes through, it's a definite win-win from Southampton's perspective. Not only do they get relaxed terms to not face Armstrong on the opener but a fair share of the midfielder's fans get to see him competing in a premier competition, even at 33.
But as of now, Armstrong to Sheffield Wednesday remains far from sealed. Shall any more twists await the move, let's see.
