Southampton have opened talks with Como over centre-forward Iván Azón. Fabrizio Romano broke the news earlier in the month and put the price at nine to ten million euros, which lands at around £8.5m.
That figure is the reason for the debate. Supporters wanted a proven scorer, and Saints Marching flagged that the club is chasing a striker who does not fit that wish.
The fee is the sticking point
Azón is valued at roughly £4.3m on his Transfermarkt player page. At £8.5m, Saints would be paying close to double that.
The Spaniard spent last season on loan at Ipswich, where he scored five goals and added four assists. His FotMob page lists an average rating of 6.49 across the campaign.
Ipswich went up as runners-up, yet Azón was rarely the man settling games. The worry sits in his finishing, because he took those five goals from an expected total above eleven.
That points to a forward who has been leaving chances behind rather than burying them. There is a kinder read too.
Four assists from a lone striker hint at a player who drops in and links the play, which suits a side that wants to build through the middle.
Where he fits and who he pushes
Ross Stewart's departure has left Saints short of senior forwards, so another body up front is needed. Azón would arrive as a mobile forward who runs the channels rather than being a pure poacher.
Damion Downs may be worth backing after his winner in Germany, and Lewis Dobbin has settled quickly since his move.
Cameron Archer, who never hides from the work, could still leave. Championship side West Brom are keen at around £5m.
Should Archer depart, the club could regret it. Landing Azón would pile the pressure on the Spaniard to make that call look wise.
One point sits in the club's favour. At £8.5m, Azón would cost little more than half the £15m Southampton spent on Archer in 2024, so the downside is smaller than the fee first suggests.
This is a bet on ceiling over output from a 23-year-old with room to grow. Saints are wagering that a fresh start brings the goals his talent has always hinted at.
Verdict: 3/5. Not the striker that the fans are calling for.
Likelihood: 4/5. This rumour isn't going away quickly, and when this is the case, something usually happens.
