The forgotten Southampton academy graduate who just won an EFL award

Southampton made hard work of their 2-1 win away at Swansea City last time out in the Championship, as the Saints relied on a second-half comeback to overcome the resilient hosts.

Vitor Matos' men actually dominated the first-half proceedings, and were good value for their 1-0 lead at the break, after Marko Stamenic beat Daniel Peretz on the 20th minute mark.

Thankfully, Tonda Eckert's visitors just keep fighting at the minute, when things are against them, as Shea Charles and Cameron Archer bagged the vital goals to secure an invaluable 2-1 victory.

The German would have felt slightly let down by the misfiring attackers who started the tight contest, with Charles and Archer having to come off the bench, to secure an eighth straight win in all competitions.

At this point, it's almost expected that the likes of Leo Scienza and Finn Azaz will be on the scoresheet when Southampton powers home convincingly to another second-tier win.

After all, combined in league action this season, the duo boasts a mightily impressive 36 goal contributions between them.

It was surprising, therefore, that they were out of sorts, by their standards, for the trip to Wales, with only four shots amassed by the usually electric pairing.

Unusually, as well, neither the Irishman nor the Brazilian was very composed on the ball, with possession squandered a combined 41 times, to the detriment of the away side, and Ross Stewart, trying to feed off their openings.

The ex-Sunderland marksman would be taken off just before the 70 minute mark, having only mustered up an unconvincing two efforts on the hosts' goal.

Thankfully, the weak showings on display were bailed out by Charles and Archer leading by example.

In an alternate reality, Southampton might well have been able to throw this academy graduate into the first team fold, to enhance an underperforming attack, as the ex-Saints starlet scooped up several EFL awards for his red-hot displays in front of goal, away from St. Mary's, while the South Coast side were notably snubbed.

It was rather perplexing to see zero Southampton recognition in the Team of the Season, Player of the Season, and Manager of the Season awards, at the annual EFL awards.

While Southampton fans everywhere were left scratching their head, they would have recognised the name of Dom Ballard, who won a stunning hat-trick of awards, off the back of a sumputous season with Richie Wellens' Leyton Orient.

Indeed, the 21-year-old - who only left his boyhood club last summer - has fit in at the O's seamlessly, with the League One Player of the Season and Young Player of the Season awards falling into his lap, alongside a place in the third tier's team of the season.

He deserves all this widespread praise, too, with Ballard managing to fire home a league-best 22 goals, at the time of writing, despite Orient fighting against the drop in League One.

Noted as being "so good" at points this season, that he is hard to leave out when fatigued, by his manager, it's refreshing to see a talent, who was discarded by their boyhood club, go on to excel so effortlessly away from the club they once called home for so long.

Only making four senior appearances at St. Mary's, it was clear that Ballard needed to step away from his roots, in order to spread his wings, as he looks to surely move up to the Championship, if suitors come sniffing for his services in the summer.
