Daniel Peretz did not look like a long-term answer when he arrived at St Mary's. The Israeli goalkeeper came in on loan from Bayern Munich in January, a mid-season fix after half a campaign spent at Hamburg. Southampton needed steadying at the back. He gave them exactly that.
From stopgap to certainty
By the end of the season the loan had turned into something the club could not let slip. Peretz signed a permanent four-year deal this summer for a reported fee of around £6m, then took the number one shirt for 2026/27.
Bayern's Max Eberl put it plainly. The German club's sporting chief said Peretz "immediately established himself as number one at Southampton" and had "found a new sporting home there." Saints Marching had already asked whether the club could afford to keep him. The answer arrived in ink.
What Southampton are keeping
The case for keeping him is easy to make once you look at his loan. Across that spell, he kept six clean sheets in 13 games.
His average rating on his FotMob profile came out at 7.43. Among Championship goalkeepers last season, few bettered it. His save rate sat at 78.6%. That is form the club could not let walk away.
On Friday night he started in goal against Eintracht Braunschweig, the second of Southampton's German friendlies, with the shirt now his for good.
The confirmed German test lineup sent some clear messages. Peretz behind a back line of Mads Roerslev, Taylor Harwood-Bellis, Jack Stephens and Welington already has a familiar look about it. Pre-season friendlies rarely settle much, though a first outing as the confirmed number one carries its own quiet weight.
There is a bigger picture too.
Southampton begin 2026/27 rooted to the foot of the Championship. The club also starts the season four points behind after the Spygate ruling.
In a promotion race that could be tight, a reliable keeper is worth even more. Tonda Eckert has chased stability in that position all summer, and in Peretz he now has it. He also brings useful experience for a 25-year-old.
He backed up Manuel Neuer at Bayern and has kept goal for Israel. Much of the squad remains unsettled, from the Shea Charles saga to an unfinished striker hunt. Between the posts, at least, Southampton look sorted.
Peretz arrived as a patch. He leaves this summer window as a fixture.
