Southampton will need to continue being flawless on the pitch to clinch a Championship playoff spot.

At the time of writing, Tonda Eckert's Saints are unbeaten in their last 14 games in all competitions, with the German perhaps looking at Russell Martin's promotion winners for some inspiration.

Indeed, Martin would guide Southampton to the Premier League at the close of the 2023/24 season, having masterminded a stunning 25-game unbeaten streak between September and February that campaign.

The modern-day Saints look equally hard to beat, so a repeat of the Wembley heroics that saw the confident South Coast side upset Leeds United could soon be on the cards.

Finn Azaz, who is arguably Southampton's best performer at the moment with a sublime ten league goals, has noted that one particular duo at St. Mary's could be crucial in allowing the Saints to live out their promotion dreams again.

While Southampton are flexing their muscles right now with their impressive unbeaten run, all of this will go out the window, if they make it into the tense playoffs, due to the nerves being ramped up.

Thankfully, several Saints players who were there during Martin's playoff-winning campaign are still on the books, and succeeding, under the German's reign, with Ryan Manning remaining as a regular in the Southampton backline, nearly two years on from promotion being won.

Alongside Manning, Taylor Harwood-Bellis and Flynn Downes stick out as similarly crucial cogs in the machine right now, who were on the same rollercoaster ride as the Irishman.

Combined, the defensive titan and midfield maestro have started a hefty 65 Championship games this season, and there's a good reason as to why they've been so ever-present.

Both players can battle and fight when games get tough, with Harwood-Bellis averaging a lively 5.9 duels per league game, and Downes averaging 3.6.

But they also have a combined goal and assist count of eight next to both of their names, with Azaz singling out the duo as being crucial if Southampton wants to make their promotion dreams come alive, again.

The entertaining midfielder, when speaking to the Daily Echo, said: "They are leading by example and bringing energy every day.

"A lot of the squad have done that in the second half of the season, me included, but those two have been vocal the whole way through.

"With the performances, they are standing up tall in every single game and training session. You know you can depend on them.

"I think that is the biggest thing about their leadership."

Their know-how of how to get promotion over the line, and their clear leader roles within the group, means they're definitely two of the first names on Eckert's team sheet right now.

Azaz is also high up Eckert's priority list when starting XIs are named, with a whole team effort required if a return to the Premier League is going to be clinched.

Southampton will have to make do without Downes for their FA Cup quarter final contest with Arsenal, as he's suspended.

But he will be raring to go against Wrexham in Southampton's next Championship game, as will the rest of his teammates, as April chucks fixtures at the Saints at a breakneck speed.
