Southampton have been frequent visitors to Wembley in recent times.

Indeed, the Saints were only here in 2024, in the Championship playoff final, which they dramatically won 1-0 courtesy of a well-worked Adam Armstrong strike, to seal promotion, at Leeds United's expense.

The promotion chasers will hope they can hold their nerve again, at the home of football, against Manchester City in the FA Cup semi-final.

Although it is expected that Pep Guardiola and Co. will stroll to victory, having found their groove in the Premier League, at just the perfect time, to leapfrog Arsenal at the very top.

Don't completely rule out the South Coast underdogs, however, as they do have a fine record at Wembley, whether it's at the new Wembley, or the old Wembley.

Southampton's memorable days out to Wembley

Of course, the most memorable outing to the capital came in 1976, when Southampton actually hoisted the FA Cup aloft, pulling off a stunning upset to topple Manchester United.

Coincidentally, it is 50 years this year since that memorable 1-0 win was spearheaded by Lawrie McMenemy, with the hope that the magic that the competition is widely known for, is in full force again as Southampton shocks another team from Manchester.

2010 was also the year that saw Southampton collect another trophy, this time at the new Wembley, as the then League One Saints won the Johnstone's Paint Trophy by comfortably overcoming Carlisle United, in a straightforward 4-1 victory.

Although Southampton were in the third-tier doldrums at the time, this must be viewed in retrospect as a fantastic day out, as club legends such as Adam Lallana and Rickie Lambert lifted the lower league honour proudly.

Beating Leeds United 1-0 is also up there, as Russell Martin secured a promotion that Tonda Eckert will be desperate to replicate.

For the time being, though, the German will be doing his utmost to name a strong team that can send tremors through the footballing world by knocking out Guardiola's serial winners, with one ice-cold star ready to be Southampton's hero at Wembley.

The Southampton star ready to be a Wembley hero

Southampton have been deadly in front of goal across recent vital Championship matches, with Ross Stewart very rarely needing a second bite of cherry to impress.

Against Bristol City last time out, the Scotsman kept his promotion-aspiring side's lengthy unbeaten run intact singlehandedly, as he scored a late equaliser during the 2-2 draw.

Only averaging 16 touches per Championship game this season, Stewart has still managed to be a potent goalscorer, and if the ball falls to him in a promising position against City, Eckert would bet on the ex-Sunderland striker powering home an opportunity.

He scored in the last round of the FA Cup after all, when Southampton pulled off an almighty shock against Arsenal, and he has past history at Wembley, when it comes to being a deadly goalscorer under considerable pressure.

Indeed, the lethal Saints number 11 would clinch promotion for former employers Sunderland up to the Championship in 2022, when scoring the decisive second goal in a 2-0 win at Wembley, against Wycombe Wanderers.

This was his 26th goal for the season, and ultimately, his most important, with Eckert praying that the Scotsman can pick up his tenth strike of this unfolding campaign, when Wembley stages what should be a fascinating FA Cup semi-final match-up between Southampton and the Premier League leaders.
