Not many Southampton players have been as key to their season as England international Taylor Harwood-Bellis.
The young centre-back has well and truly stepped up, being handed the role of vice captain after Adam Armstrong’s January departure, at just 24 years old.
Following a season as one of the best players in the league, Saints will feel almost certain that Harwood-Bellis is destined for the Premier League, whether they win promotion through the play-offs or not.
One of the Championship’s leading players
Since Tonda Eckert’s arrival as Southampton’s first team head coach, Taylor Harwood-Bellis leads the Championship for touches and successful passes.
The epitome of the modern-day centre-back, he offers astute defending, top positioning, ball-playing and leadership skills. Most of Southampton’s moves from the back are triggered by a brilliant Harwood-Bellis pass or piece of reading of the game - he really is a cut above.
Shown by his England appearance and debut goal in 2024, Harwood-Bellis is already beyond the Championship. Despite his struggles in the top flight for Southampton in 2024/25, playing a part in a better team will see his contributions skyrocket.
He admitted in a recent post-match interview with the BBC, “Last year was no good for the fans, it was horrible, and they stayed in their numbers. Tonight [the Arsenal FA Cup victory], they believed in the football. the willingness to run and defend. I think that’s a credit to us and the manager in bringing the relationship back.”
Whether it is with Southampton or not, one thing’s almost certain - Harwood-Bellis will be in the top flight somewhere next season.
Offers from elsewhere
West Ham United saw a deadline-day offer for Harwood-Bellis turned down in February 2026, and it looks like a vital piece of business by the Saints to keep his services.
The Hammers could well follow up in their retained interest once again in the summer, especially if Southampton fail to win promotion - and it would be a move that makes sense.
Other mid-table Premier League clubs would do well to sign Harwood-Bellis, which is why Southampton must try to keep hold of him, with their aspiration to be in a similar position in the future.
The Saints will want at least £20m for Harwood-Bellis’s services in the summer, beating the fee they signed him for from Manchester City in 2024. The Cityzens will almost certainly have a sell-on clause, so the Saints will have to try to maximise profit.
The Saints have a gem on their hands - they need to make the most of Harwood-Bellis while they have him.
