Tom Fellows is the quiet loser in Southampton’s Norwich win

Tom Fellows watched the entire match at Norwich from the bench, even after Tonda Eckert was forced to make changes at Carrow Road.

Eckert made four changes at Carrow Road and none of them involved Tom Fellows. Kuryu Matsuki and Samuel Edozie started; Matsuki scored the only goal, and Fellows sat among the substitutes.

Then the game started making Eckert’s decisions for him. Downes went off injured, Zach Abbott was hooked at half-time, and the manager sent on Caspar Jander, James Bree, Cyle Larin and Divin Mubama, one after another, while Fellows watched.

To be fair to Fellows, his particular brand of play: dribbling the ball out of tight situations and moving the ball upfield in transition, wasn't really warranted on Wednesday night as Norwich pressed for an equaliser.

A modest return for Fellows

Fellows is the only out-and-out right winger at the club, despite Kuryu Matsuki making the position his own this season. The Japanese international has added goals to the team, something that Fellows has struggled to do since his arrival in the summer of 2025.

Saints Marching’s winners-and-losers piece put Fellows in the losers column for that reason. It argued that Matsuki’s form makes a return to the starting lineup unlikely and that his minutes have dried up.

Look at the first half. Edozie had a poor forty-five minutes at Norwich by all accounts, improved after the break, and kept his place throughout as Scienza and Fellows watched on from the bench.

Fellows has just six Championship appearances this season: three of them starts. That is a modest return for a winger who arrived from West Brom in August 2025 with a big Championship reputation.

What the winning habit does to substitutes

Southampton have spent a bigger share of their Championship matches in a winning position than any other side in the division, according to Opta. That is lovely news for the table but awkward news for a wide player sitting on the bench.

When a team leads this often, the substitutes who get minutes are the ones who help hold a lead. Tonda Eckert used Bree and Larin to close out Norwich, not a winger to stretch the game.

Nobody should write Fellows off. He won the Under-21 European Championship with England in 2025. He just lacks a role in this Saints team.

Bolton at home on Saturday could be the first afternoon that asks for what he offers. Downes is a doubt, Eckert is already shuffling his midfield, and the boss could turn to Fellows to keep The Trotters penned in.

If that call does not come, the conversation about January gets interesting. Until then, a spot in the match-day squad and a few minutes here and there is about all Fellows can expect.
