Who do Southampton need to sign in the 2026 summer transfer window?

With one week to go until the 2026 summer transfer window officially opens, Southampton have already made two confirmed signings.

Loan additions from January, Cyle Larin and Daniel Peretz, have both signed on for the club after losing a combined one league game in a Saints shirt, which came in Peretz’s first against Hull City.

Johannes Spors will have work to do to ensure the Saints recruit well, while they’ll hope to retain as many of their starting players as possible.

Southampton Chairman Dragan Solak told BBC Radio Solent in a recent interview, "Our main goal for this transfer window is not to make money, it's to make at least the same quality if not better team for the next season."

The club will be hoping that not too many signings will need to be made - but here are the essentials that need to be looked at.

A backup for Finn Azaz

Finn Azaz fought through the final stages of last season with a knee injury, often seen wearing straps to play through the niggling issue.

One of the squad’s most important players, the Irishman cannot be relied upon for the whole 46-game Championship season again, and needs the chance to take some games easy or from the bench.

Dragan Solak also shares this view and told the Daily Echo, "If nobody's leaving, I have a full team. But we need somebody able to play at the level of Finn at his position, although the problem is Finn insists on playing every minute.”

A signing to support Finn Azaz is certainly needed, and is top of Southampton’s to-do list.

Another goalkeeper

Southampton have completed the signing of Daniel Peretz, and are close to signing backup George Long. With Jamie Jones and Alex McCarthy coming to the ends of their contracts, and Aaron Ramsdale and Gavin Bazunu likely to depart in the window, a second choice shot-stopper needs to be brought in.

They’ll recoup over £20m for the services of Ramsdale and Bazunu, who both spent stints at the club as number one goalkeeper, but only a small fraction of this fee will need to be spent on the next goalkeeper, after the signing of first-choice Peretz cost the club under £7m.

Whoever the Saints get in must be prepared to deputise the starting Peretz, and be ready to play if needed at the last minute.

A midfield signing

It’s no big secret that Caspar Jander’s representatives are pushing for a move away from Southampton, with many transfer links coming out in recent weeks and months tipping the 23-year-old midfielder for a return to Germany.

Shea Charles is another player who may have suitors, with Manchester United and Everton both registering interest.

The Saints must be prepared for at least one to leave and ready a midfield signing. Perhaps Johannes Spors will target experienced EFL midfielder Dan Neil, who is now a free agent.

Whatever happens this window, Spors needs a contingency plan for any players with a chance of departing. His transfer efforts so far, apart from the disappointing signing of striker Damion Downs, have been good.

If they’re going to get promoted in 2026/27, the Saints need another good window, which opens on June 15.
